Pakistan inflation, Lahore price gaps expose wider strain

LAHORE, PAKISTAN / RankWire.AI / – Consumers in Lahore are paying sharply above government-notified prices for essential foods as Pakistan faces renewed inflation pressure. Official rate reductions have failed to produce matching prices across many retail markets. Chicken, vegetables and fruit all showed large gaps between notified and market rates this week. The increases are hitting households as national consumer inflation reaches double digits and fuel costs add further pressure to everyday spending.

Chicken meat carried an official price of Rs461 per kilogram after authorities reduced the notified rate by Rs22. Retailers, however, charged between Rs520 and Rs570 per kilogram across Lahore. Potatoes carried an official range of Rs27 to Rs30 but sold for Rs50 to Rs70. Tomatoes officially ranged between Rs130 and Rs180, while market prices reached Rs250 to Rs300. Onions sold for Rs200 to Rs220 despite a notified ceiling of Rs175.

Other vegetables showed the same divide between official lists and actual market prices. Spinach carried a notified rate of Rs57 to Rs60 but sold for as much as Rs120. Farm cucumbers officially cost Rs85 to Rs90, while retailers charged up to Rs150. Fruit prices showed even wider differences. Authorities listed some dates between Rs310 and Rs435 per kilogram, yet reported retail prices ranged from Rs800 to Rs2,400.

Inflation accelerates as fuel costs climb

Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data show consumer inflation reached 11.1% in August, up from 9.2% in July. Urban inflation stood at 10.4%, while rural inflation reached 12.2%. The agency’s weekly price index rose 8.62% from a year earlier in the week ending September 10. Onions increased 125.52% year on year. LPG rose 55.42%, diesel climbed 45.26%, petrol increased 39.10%, and wheat flour rose 30.18%.

The federal government responded on September 14 by approving a targeted fuel relief package through the Economic Coordination Committee. Eligible two-wheelers and three-wheelers will receive Rs500 per week under the program. Owners of qualifying cars up to 800cc will receive Rs1,000 for every 10-day period. The government limited assistance to non-commercial users and one vehicle per owner. The Ministry of IT and Telecom will manage the digital Fuel Pass System.

Education indicators expose another persistent weakness

Pakistan’s official social indicators also show major education gaps alongside the renewed cost-of-living pressure. Pakistan Bureau of Statistics data put the national literacy rate at 63% for people aged 10 and above. Male literacy stands at 73%, compared with 54% for females. Urban literacy reaches 74%, while rural literacy stands at 55%. Punjab records a 68% literacy rate. Nationally, 28% of children aged five to 16 remain out of school.

Government figures show federal and provincial education spending totaled Rs962 billion in fiscal 2025, equal to 0.8% of GDP. Punjab’s out-of-school rate stands at 21%, according to the latest household survey. Those figures do not establish that education levels caused Lahore’s retail pricing gaps. They do document another major challenge facing the country. Meanwhile, Punjab authorities continue publishing official market rates, while Lahore consumers face substantial differences between those prices and reported retail charges.
